Steve Stroud, NAI Carolantic Chairman Receives the 2016 ULI York Award for Community Builder

RALEIGH, NC - September 22, 2016 - Steve Stroud, SIOR, founder and Chairman of NAI Carolantic Realty was the recipient of the prestigious “Community Builder” Award presented September 22nd at the Annual ULI York Awards. The presentation was held at the NC Museum of Art in front of 150+ ULI members, professionals from all areas of real estate, colleagues, family and friends.

“We’re thrilled to be honoring Steve who was instrumental in bringing the Carolina Hurricanes to Raleigh and in founding Highwoods Properties,” said ULI Triangle Executive Director, Julie Paul. The awards are given in honor of J.W. Willie York, an early member and later director of the Urban Land Institute, and developer of Cameron Village in Raleigh. The York Awards are given to individuals and companies who have made exceptional contributions to the creation and continued vitality of thriving communities in the Triangle region. The Awards Jury is comprised of community leaders from a variety of backgrounds.

In 1972, Stroud founded NAI Carolantic Realty and over the years has successfully built a diverse team of professionals providing all the specialties of a full-service commercial real estate company. He has also been involved in some of the most influential real estate projects in the Triangle including the Highwoods Office Park, Crossroad Corporate Park in Cary, Alexander Place and Brier Creek in Raleigh and White Oak Crossing in Garner.

One of Stroud’s greatest contributions was being named Chairman of the Coliseum Committee in 1985 to study the feasibility of a major events facility in Raleigh. His unwavering commitment to the community led to the creation of the Centennial Authority where he also served as Chair and was successful in helping build what was to be known then as the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. He was also instrumental in attracting and convincing the Hartford Whalers hockey team, now the Carolina Hurricanes, to relocate to the area. Today, the Arena is also home to the NC State basketball program. This facility’s success has exceeded the dreams of those who supported it. Few would have been willing to take on the task of leading this 13-year effort, but Stroud managed to pull off the deal which forever changed the face of the Triangle area, and will boost economic development for years to come.
